Lessons Learned: Tips from Other Presenters
We asked a wide range of previous successful NSPS presenters for their top ten tips that they would pass on to others. Here is a sampling what they offered.
By the time everyone gets settled and you do some sort of introduction an amazing amount of time has passed. You really only have a chance to make three to five points during an hour presentation. Make sure you do not try and cram too much in. What often happens is that we save the best for last and if time runs the best stuff gets short changed. An hour is not an hour.
- Let them participate! They will want to ask questions. Let them. Rather than “throw you off your game” it will let you tailor your presentation to make it have more value for those actually in the room rather than those for whom you prepared.
- You will miss other presentations. It took me a while to figure out that part of presenting was missing other things. Last minute preparation, getting to the room early, answering questions afterward they all took time. I used to fight it now I just plan for it.
- Keep to the topic. It is easy to get drawn into something very specific to one person in the room that takes you off the advertised topic. I have learned the hard way that that is not fair to someone else in the audience who is spending their time and money to hear what was advertised. They could have gone to another session if they knew you were not going to deliver.
