Dick Allsopp’s World Famous Powerboat Challenge

This race is named in honor of Dick Allsopp, the “Godfather” of US Powerboating

 

NOTICE OF RACE

1    STANDARDS

The regatta will be governed by the standards as defined in the current US Powerboating Standards Book.

 

2    ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

2.1    The race is open to one team per each of the following regions (New England – ME, MA, NH, VT, Mid-Atlantic – CT, NY, NJ, Chesapeake – PA, MD, VA, Southeast – NC, SC, GA, Florida, Gulf Coast – MS AL, LA, TX, Great Lakes – PA, OH, IL, WI, MI, California, Pacific Northwest – OR, WA, HI, Inland – AZ, UT, CO) and all others, as assembled by the area Powerboat Training Coordinator.

2.2    Eligible teams may enter by submitting a carefully chosen team name to Charlie Arms, Rob Crafa, Zac Oppenheim or Lynn Lynch no later than 1030 on Friday, January 23.

2.3    No entries will be accepted after 1031 on Friday, January 23 unless accompanied with an inappropriate bribe.

2.4    Teams may have as many members as they can find.  A maximum of four (4) may be allowed on the powerboat.  The rest should form the cheering section.

4    SCHEDULE

1215    Competitors’ Meeting
1225    Start of competition
1325    No course runs after this time or Jessica Servis’ head will explode and the sponsors with      demo boats will be angry and stop letting us sail their boats (Both are bad, very bad).

5    RACE INSTRUCTIONS

The race will consist of a series of powerboat handling skills on each leg of the course that will be completed by each team.  Each leg of the course must be driven by a different member of the team.  Course diagrams will be available no later than 1215 on Friday, January 23.  The starting order will be determined by random selection and be posted at the Competitors’ Meeting.  Teams that are not in the starting area when it is their turn will be heckled.

 

6     PENALTY SYSTEM

Teams not understanding or abiding with the goal of driving as slowly and excellently as possible will have to face the namesake of the race, Capt. Allsopp.

 

7    SCORING

A panel of judges will determine team scores based on an elaborate algorithm taking into account operating skills, abidance of the US Powerboating Standards, uniforms, team name, team spirit, props and crowd support.

 

8    PRIZES

The first place team will be presented with a round of drinks by the last place team.

 

9    SAFETY

9.1    An appropriate life jacket shall be worn and properly secured at all times when a competitor is on the dock or boat.  The Organizing Authority (OA) has the authority to reject any life jacket that does not fit their definition of appropriate.

9.2    No boat may exceed an idle speed at any time.

 

10.    PROTESTS

Protests may be filed by filling out a US Sailing Protest Form and swimming to the moored boat 250 yards off the shore to deliver to the seagull who lives there.
